This morning we practiced in the sanctuary for our Advent service. They did a great job sharing the Good News! We can't wait for you to hear it on Dec. 13th. It was fun to hear The Candymaker's Gift. After hearing the story the students made their own candy cane ornaments out of pipe cleaners. Have your child tell you about all of the things that they think of from the nativity story as he or she looks at the candy cane. Your child will enjoy hanging this special ornament on your tree. Some of the sixth grade students came into our class during literacy center time to help us. It was a great time to receive extra help and to share what we are learning with others. During the afternoon we especially enjoyed having a Christmas tree relay race. It was fun to have a turn to be a Christmas tree and to have teammates race to see which tree could be decorated first. We also had fun making up our own games with feathers and spoons. We reviewed making part to whole relationships and learned more about the symbol of the plus sign and equal signs. Towards the end of the day we enjoyed coming up with names for our new school "Ram" mascot. The top winning name in kindergarten so far is "Ramsey". In the Friday Folders families will also have a chance to vote. Please feel free to fill out the sheet and send it back on Monday. The kids really liked being able to have a part in naming our school mascot.
Today was a "Zero Hero" day.....#70. The kids get so excited to have another tenth day of school. We dance to every set of ten. We also had fun exercising to a number of videos that helped us practice the concept of one more or one less. The day started with a chapel that ended our church year. We are thankful that God has blessed us throughout the year and that we have the hope of heaven. We continued through our rotation of literacy and thematic centers. In the afternoon the students played a game with a Math partner to practice the concept of +1 or -1. In Science we watched a video to launch a unit on Physical Science. A mechanical engineer explained how scientists use their senses to observe objects. Later we measured objects with paperclips. We estimated the lengths and then checked and recorded our measurements.
sThis week we have been practicing for our Advent service in church. We can't wait to share it with you on December 13. We are also learning how Simeon and Anna saw the Savior and how we can't wait for the time we get to see our Savior's face as well. During mini lessons for literacy center time we learned how to match text to pictures. We also practiced identifying our letters fluently as we timed ourselves. One of our centers helps us to put word family caterpillars together. Students match the pictures that rhyme on various caterpillar circles. Then they complete each caterpillar by putting the word & feet under each piece. There is a mystery word that students try to guess as they feel letters in bags. Then they write a sentence using the word and make sure the sentence is in correct form. It needs to begin with an uppercase letter, have spaces between the words, and end with a period. At the word work table the students are trying to see how many little words they can make from the letters in the word gingerbread. The other two centers give practice in sequencing and in dictionary skills. During thematic center time the students are getting ready for Advent which begins this Sunday. They are making an Advent chain to help them count down to the birthday of Jesus. The students should remove one loop a night beginning this Sunday. At the green table the students are making a book to help them learn various ways to celebrate the birth of our Savior. They are having fun painting Jesus in the manger at the blue table. Look for these in the hallway soon. Finally the students are able to practice the correct formation of Cc, its sound, and write a story about Christmas in their journals. In Math we continue to practice making one more or one less than a number. We played a spinner game to help the students practice this concept. We also learned about the tradition of Christmas cards and how this is a special way that we can share the Good News about our Savior with others. It was fun to learn how our cards get to our loved ones as we learned about the postal process. In Social Studies we also learned about workers and how in some small towns or parts of cities some workers live above their store. It was interesting to learn about small businesses and all the things that need to be done before a store opens and after it closes.
Below are 3 videos that show our current practice for our upcoming Advent service. You may use these to help your child at home if necessary. We recite all of Luke 2:15-20.
We had a very busy day as we are wrapping up our first trimester this week. So in the process I did not take many photos. We are also beginning to learn words and songs for our Advent service on December 13. We began a new set of literacy centers and some of them are helping the students to work on ending sounds in words. At another center the students are taking surveys about making gingerbread. The reading center helps the students to practice matching words to a poem and the word work center provides practices with putting words in the correct order to make sentences in a special train book. We had fun singing a fun "Hippo Hop" song as we practiced words that begin with h. It is important to practice the correct formation of Hh and to make sure that h does not resemble n. In the afternoon the students investigated the temperature of ice water, warm water and cold water using a thermometer. We verified that the red line on the thermometer goes up for warmer temperatures and down for cooler temperatures. In Math we continued to work on part to whole relationships and worked hard to identify the missing part. Finally, we are beginning to learn about animals that are getting ready for winter. We read a special newspaper about hibernation and we look forward to watching the video that goes with the newspaper tomorrow.
