Today we learned about other ways to get ready for the birthday of Jesus in Advent. We also learned how some people use a log rather than a wreath. Some use blue and pink candles, others use purple and pink and some people in Germany or Austria use red and white. We were excited to meet some Cronauer relatives that came all the way from Germany to visit. We listened to them as they explained about the German Christmas markets. It was fun to hear them talk in German and they helped us learn how to count in German. We learned how Germany is famous for gingerbread. We can't wait to hear what our gingerbread ornaments were up to in the German Christmas market.
We also began some new literacy centers which focus a lot on segmenting sounds and writing sentences this week. Our gingerbread thematic centers were also finished today. In Math we are learning that there are a number of ways to measure. You can measure length, temperature, weight, time, and speed. We are learning how balance scales work. Early dismissal on Friday, Dec. 21 will be at 1:20p.m. for kindergarten. (not 1:50p.m.)
We began our day in worship as grades 5-8 led us in a beautiful service during chapel. They did an outstanding job! I hope you had a chance to worship with us. The kindergarten students wrote them thank you letters and later congratulated them on their way through the hallway.
We began some new gingerbread thematic centers. At the blue table students are learning about symmetry and equal parts. They are sorting some gingerbread and deciding if they are symmetrical or not symmetrical. They are attempting to draw the other side of a gingerbread, snowman, and bell. Then they fold these shapes on the line of symmetry and cut them out to see how close they were. When they open these up they are able to see how close their drawing lines were and to also see how it looks when both sides match. They also tried to divide some food up evenly to share equal parts. At the yellow table the students are having fun using little gingerbread house word families and placing consonants in front of the word family. They then decide if the word they made is real or nonsense. The green table is having fun using different Christmas decorations to measure tall gingerbread. They estimate how many trees, snowflakes, candy canes, etc. it will take and then they take out the pieces and measure to see how close their estimates were. The red table students are making up gingerbread stories in their journals, along with practicing Gg. Later today we had fun playing gingerbread tic-tac-toe and a race the snowman game. They also learned about a new app which will help kids choose settings and characters to put on a puppet play. We made one as a whole class and shared it on Seesaw. Today we learned more about the events that happened when Jesus was born. We discussed how God placed a star in the sky to show that Jesus was born. We learned how both the shepherds and the wise men followed that star to go worship Jesus. The shepherds were closer and so they were able to arrive that night. The wise men had to travel a longer distance and arrived later on at the house where they found Jesus. It was fun to watch a video which helped us to understand some of the events. We praise God for giving us the best Gift of all and know that He is the Light and our King.
