We began some ocean centers today. Some made some crayon resist ocean pictures while others made an ocean sight word book. At some other tables students wrote ocean stories or sorted shells. Later in the afternoon it was fun to learn how velcro was invented, along with some other inventions. We find it interesting that often inventors study nature to come up with their ideas. It is awesome to look at what our Lord created and it doesn't get better than that for inspiration!
This week we are learning how God gave Paul faith. He changed Paul's heart and then he used Paul to spread the Good News. We learned how God took care of Paul during a shipwreck.
In Math we are learning about the less than, greater than, and equal signs. It was fun to demonstrate this during an alligator chomp song. The alligator mouth eats the number that is more. The students also had a game to help them practice using the greater than, less than, and equal signs as they played the game with partners. During literacy centers this week the students are getting practice with CVC words. They roll a word with dice and then determine if the word that is made is real or nonsense. At the phonemic awareness table the students are practicing blends as they search for the blends using magnifying glasses. At the alphabet table the students are playing a game to help sort long i and short i words. The reading table gives the students a chance to sort facts and opinions. Finally at the writing table the students are writing sentences in correct form as they use the words rain, flower, sun, and ladybug. Later in the afternoon the students helped to plant some flower seeds. It was fun to look at a variety of sunflower seeds and to discuss their potential height. We also looked at some coneflower and zinnia seeds. We started these in some little greenhouses. It will be fun to see if the seeds put in the ground outside our classroom will sprout first or if the seeds in the greenhouses will sprout first. The sunflower seed varieties have a range from a dwarf size of 1-2' compared to a mammoth seed with a potential of 12'. We had a wonderful Easter party today! Thanks to all of the parents that helped to host it! The students really enjoyed it and it helped us to focus on our risen Lord and the new life He gives us.
This week we continue to work on stories for our Authors' Tea. We look forward to the time we will share them with you. During literacy centers the students are making bunnies and then sorting events from 2 different stories, Bunny Trouble and More Bunny Trouble. They are playing a spinner game to find words with matching long vowels. At another table they are rolling dice with word family rimes and then identifying an onset to make the word. The word work table gives the kids practice finding nouns that are animals, food, or vehicles.
We continue adding things to our oviparous books. The kids had fun sorting certain eggs from smallest to largest today. The hummingbird egg was the smallest and the ostrich egg was the largest. Yesterday they enjoyed making big ostriches and little fly clips. We hope to finish these books and our oviparous unit of study by the end of the week. In Math the students have been practicing addition facts 0-5. We are taking little timed tests to help encourage some memorization of these facts. We also have been measuring 2D and 3D shapes. After measuring some shapes today, the kids sequenced them from shortest to tallest. Yesterday we were measuring the height and width of 3D shapes. It was fun to make an Easter book today to help us remember events of Holy Week. You can enjoy this Easter basket shaped book together and talk about things that our Lord did for us. |
